Kirtan “Yoga of the Heart”
Kirtan (yoga chant) is a part of Bhakti yoga, or the devotional path. It is a participatory music experience that weaves the audience into the performance. It uses Holy names, aspects of these names, and ragas (i.e. melodic structures) in order to open our hearts and awaken the divinity within. The format is a call-and-response style, and often times, the words are in Sanskrit. By chanting these Holy names of God, the dormant love of God that lie in our own hearts is awakened, and brings a deeper realization of the divine with it.

Kirtan with Kabir
2nd Saturday of every month at 7:30 pm
Divine Singing Chant & Raga
with Kabir and the Nada Brahma Singers
Kabir brings the depths of Indian music and devotional traditions to beautiful chanting celebrations. We also sing simple ragas, the magical musical shapes of Indian melody.
The evenings are a chance to enter together the depths of Divine Singing. Each evening is a complete meditation in itself on a unique theme and includes chants from the previous month also.
Music is an ancient Yoga dating back to the Vedas ˆ it was a supporting science for insuring that the Mantras of the Sama Veda were sung perfectly. Since then, there have been thousands of years of master musicians and saint singers taking the tradition ever deeper.
When Kabir was studying the classical ragas many hours a day, he was introduced to Kirtan and was amazed to find the simple melodies and devotion can take one just as deep as profound study of ragas! And as many of the Kirtan Chants are in ragas, they make the best introduction to Indian music.
Kabir has inspired and led the Nada Brahma Singers in Denver for nearly ten years. Nada Brahma means god as resonance of pure inner sound, indicating the discipline of allowing our voices to vibrate at the deepest levels within us. The Nada Brahma singers are a few dedicated individuals of all musical levels that gather every week to sing. [classes are Tuesday nights at 8pm: Kabir comes on the 1st and 3rd [& 5th] Tuesdays of every month to Shiva Mandir, 1391 S Pennsylvania, a few blocks from IYCD. Kabir is available for private lessons on Tuesday afternoons, or come to Boulder.]
